Das Konzept des API 2500 entspricht in erster Linie dem eines Stereo Bus- bzw. Summenkompressors. Er läßt sich mit der Stereo Coupling- Funktion in 6 Stufen von 100% (Stereo) bis 0% dual Mono-Modus variieren. Das Side Chain Steuersignal kann mit einem Hoch- und Tiefpass Filter beeinflußt werden. Die "Old / New" Style Kompressions-Funktion macht diesen Kompressor flexibel und musikalisch. "Old" Style modifiziert den Side Chain Schaltkreis zu einer sogenannten "Feedback Type" Schaltung, die man beispielsweise auch in API 525, UREI-, EAR oder in Fairchild Kompressoren vorfindet. "New" style ermöglicht -wie der Name dieser Funktion schon verrät- die Kompressions-Charakteristik vieler moderner VCA Kompressoren. Einzigartig ist die Verwendung der patentierten "Thrust"- Schaltung, die dem Bass ordentlich Punch verleiht. Diese Funktion läßt sich mit einem 2dB/per Octave Hochpass Filter abschwächen oder mit dem Bypass- Schalter ganz aus dem Signalweg entfernen.
Die Ausgangsstufe des Kompressors verfügt über ein "Auto Gain Make Up" mit dem man Kompressionverhältnis und Threshold verändern kann, ohne dabei den Ausgangspegel zu beeinflussen. Auch diese Funktion kann mittels Bypass gänzlich deaktiviert werden, wenn man mit den konventionellen Ausgangspegel Reglern arbeiten möchte. Mit dem Output Trim werden Pegel-Unterschiede zwischen dem linken und dem rechten Ausgangssignal in einem Bereich von ± 2 dB ausgeglichen. Der Threshold umfaßt einen Bereich von -20 bis
+ 10dB. Die Attack Zeit bewegt sich zwischen 0,03 ms und 30 ms, die Release Zeit zwischen 50ms und 3 sec. Der API 2500 bietet außerdem noch anwählbare Hard-, Medium- und Soft Knee Kompression.
Wie alle API Produkte ist auch der API 2500 Bus Compressor konsequent in diskreter Transistor Technik aufgebaut.

API 3124 MV
4 Channel Preamp mit Mixbus
he 3124MV utilizes the same microphone preamp circuit that is used in all API consoles. It uses the RE-115 K mic input transformer along with the same output transformer that is used in API equalizers. The unit offers Variable Output Level Control, switchable 3:1 output transformer selection, and an internal 48-volt phantom power supply, which is front panel switchable for each channel. Also provided is a front panel -20 dB pad switch that affects both the mic and line in. A 1/4" phone jack is available on the rear panel for each channel as an insert tip-send/ ring-return placed between the mic pre amp output and the mixer input.
Like the 3124V, the 3124MV provides up to 65 dB of gain. The Hi-Z front panel input goes directly to the op-amp, allowing a low level input such as a guitar or bass to be amplified without a matching transformer or direct box. This Hi-Z input can accept input levels as high as +20 dBu, making it perfect for keyboards and other high level devices. The rear output is an XLR connector.
Additionally, the 3124MV adds a stereo panner with a level control, and a post "fader" aux send. The stereo panners and the aux sends are bussed to master output controls and then to the rear panel jacks. A stereo AUX return is provided to return effects or cascade additional mixers for more inputs. The unique stereo aux return control acts to balance the left/right signal, yet staying stereo. It can also be used as a mono return.

4 Channel Preamp
Like the API 3124+, the 3124V is a high quality, compact, 4-channel mic preamp. It is equipped with the RE-115 K mic input transformer and the proprietary output transformer found in all API mic pres and throughout the API product line. Additionally, the 3124V offers Variable Output Level Control and switchable 3:1 output transformer selection. The unit has an internal 48-volt phantom power supply, which is switchable for each channel, as well as -20dB pad switches that affect both the mic and Hi-Z instrument inputs, both located on the front panel.
The 3124V also features up to 65dB of gain. Additionally, the Hi-Z front panel inputs feed directly to the op amps, which allow a low level input such as a guitar or bass to be amplified without a matching transformer or direct box. API 500-6B Lunchbox

The API Model 500-6B six position rack is designed to accept many different API "standard" 5.25" X 1.5" modules. This allows an engineer the flexibility of bringing along specialized EQ effects to any situation. The 500-6B comes self-powered, with a rear panel selected AC voltage switch, and a removable power cord. The input/output jacks are the two standard patch-bay jacks found in every professional recording console; large frame 1/4" or the "TT" style smaller jack. In addition, the 500-6B is available with XLR jacks. This eliminates the need for special adaptors and custom cables.
The 500-6B comes standard with a +48 volt internal phantom power supply, bussed to pin 15 for the API 512C to access. It must be noted that the 560A series equalizer may use pin 15 for a "direct output" and must be disabled on the 560A circuit board edge connector by cutting a trace. This will eliminate 48 volts from damaging the 560A series equalizers. If in doubt, feel free to contact the factory.
API makes several modules for the 500-6B, such as the 512C mic preamp, the 525 compressor, the 560 Graphic EQ, and the 550B four band EQ. Combinations of these modules make perfect stereo recording packages (two 513C's and two 550B's) or vocalist's box, (one 512C, two EQ's and one 525 compressor).

The API Model 500VPR is powered externally by a tri-polar power supply and is designed to accept API standard format 5.25" X 1.5" modules. The 500VPR is internally wired for PIN 2 hot, and comes with the API L200PS. The input/output jacks are both XLRs. The 500VPR can hold up to ten API modules. API makes several modules to fit this rack, including the 550A, 550b, 560, 525, and 512c. Like all API products, the 500VPR rack enjoys API's standard 5 year warranty.

API 525
Discrete Compressor, Re-Issue
Originally released in the 70's, the API 525 is a "feedback" type compressor. An input (threshold) control and output (make-up gain) control are provided, along with an additional "Ceiling" fine-tune function which can increase gain reduction (lower threshold) while simultaneously raising output level to match, so the user can alter dynamics "on the fly" without level changes. A compression/limit switch sets ratio at either 2:1 or 20:1. Attack time is as fast as 15u/s. Four auto release modes are offered via two switches, 0.1s, 0.5s, 1.5s, & 2.0s. A De-Ess function inserts an inverse vocal energy curve filter in the detector for effective sibilance/pop reduction. The 525 design has been taken from the original blue prints and spec control drawings from the API archives.
Release times vary with frequency, with high frequency / full bandwidth content released faster than lower frequencies for natural envelope tracking. Attack time is fixed, chosen to catch the fastest peaks, without "pumping". Equally useful as a tracking, mixdown or program compressor/limiter, the 525 utilizes "vintage" dynamics control and an easy to use multi-function control set. The 525 has a hard-wire bypass switch, a balanced input, and a pinout that is the same as all the other 500 series modules. Two or more 525s can be linked for multi-channel compression.
The API 525 Compressor makes use of the 2510 and 2520 op-amps and exhibits the reliability, long life, and uniformity which are characteristic of all API products.

API 527
Compressor/Limiter
The API 527 takes it's place alongside the family of API VCA based compressors, the 225L and the 2500 Stereo Bus Compressor. Anyone familiar with those units will immediately be at home with the 527. Features common to the line like "feed forward" (NEW) and "feed back" (OLD) gain reduction methods selectable on the front panel, provide a choice of "that old way", or "the new way" of compression, for the highest level of flexibility in signal gain control. The "old way" or Feed-Back method is what most of the classic compressors used for the gain control circuit. The "new way" gain reduction is more typical of the newer VCA type compressors that rely on RMS detectors for the gain control voltage.
There is a "SOFT"/"HARD" switch for an "over-easy" type compression resulting in a very natural, uncompressed sound or a typical sharp knee type that lends itself to a much more severe limiting effect.
The Threshold control sets the initial operating parameter. The 527 can be operated with signal input levels from +10 dBu to -20 dBu.
The 527 features an Output fader control that ranges from minus infinity to +10dB, and output capability is +28 dBu through our 2520 discrete amplifier and a large API output transformer. The output level remains fairly constant regardless of the threshold or ratio control, much like the "more/less" Ceiling control on the API 525 compressor. This allows for live adjustments without any noticeable gain changes in the program level.
The patented THRUST function can be switched in and out via the front panel as well, applying a high pass filter before the RMS detector circuit that preserves that punchy bottom end.
Attack and Release are fully adjustable on the 527. Release time can be adjusted by rotating the inner concentric RELEASE knob. Release time constants: .3 sec to 3 sec. Attack time is adjusted on the outer concentric ATTACK knob, which ranges from 1 millisecond to 25 milliseconds.
The 527 is designed for individual channel use or, through the use of the LINK switch, two units can be combined for Stereo applications via a motherboard bus connection.
The 527 Compressor/Limiter makes use of the 2510 and 2520 Discrete Op-amps and exhibits the reliability, long life, and signature sound which are characteristic of API products.

API 550a
Discrete 3 Band EQ
Few equalizers enjoy the respect and admiration of the coveted API 550A. Designed by the now-legendary Saul Walker in the late '60s, the discrete 550A was first used as a modular OEM equalizer. As the industry rapidly embraced the sonic quality of the 550A, it quickly found its way into many custom console designs by Frank DeMedio and other leading engineers. Many of these consoles are still in use today.
Forty years later, the 550A remains the standard against which other EQs are measured, and it has played a major role in the recording industry for decades. Still copied but never duplicated, the 550A became API's standard channel module EQ when the company began manufacturing consoles in 1971. With virtually all existing units spoken for, popular demand for this EQ resulted in API finally resuming production in 2004.
The 550A provides reciprocal equalization at 21 points in 5 steps of boost to a maximum of 12dB of gain at each point. The fifteen equalization points are divided into three overlapping ranges. The high and low frequency ranges are individually selectable as either peaking or shelving, and a band-pass filter may be inserted independently of all other selected equalization settings. Frequency ranges and boost/cut are selected by three dual-concentric switches, and a pushbutton "in" switch allows the EQ to be silently introduced to the signal path. A small toggle switch is used to insert the band-pass filter into the 550A.
The combination of Walker's incomparable 2520 op amp and his "Proportional Q" circuitry gives the 550A user an uncomplicated way to generate acoustically superior equalization.
With the long-awaited reissue of this unit, an EQ that has had such a part in the history of recording is continuing to make history in today's music.

Based on API's original 550 from the late '60s, the API 550b is a continuation of the EQ that played a major role in the history of music recording, but with an additional filter band and several new frequencies. Incorporating API's exclusive circuitry and proprietary components (such as the legendary API 2520 Op Amp), the 550b artfully blends the past with the present. So many hit records still depend on the unique 550 sound that engineers around the world find it to be an invaluable tool. In fact, the 550b design has been taken from the original blue prints and spec control drawings from the API archives. It is unlike any other EQ you will ever use.
Rather than offer a huge assortment of complex features, the API 550b provides exactly the right number of controls. Its four EQ bands are overlapped significantly to aid in dual roles as problem solver and sweetening device with each band offering seven switchable filter frequencies that span four-to-five octaves. These frequencies, purposely selected to be musical rather than numeric, were selected by an experienced "who's who" list of the industry's most proficient engineers.
Making use of API's "Proportional Q," an innovation designed by Saul Walker in the '60s, the 550b intuitively widens the filter bandwidth at minimal settings and narrows it at higher settings without the need for additional bandwidth controls. This unique feature minimizes the "phase-shift" sound found in many equalizers. In addition, the reciprocal nature of the 550b enables the user to "undo" what has been done previously with exact precision.
The benefits of the API 550b are most obvious to those who work with EQ on a continuous basis.
